New Feature for Google+: Vanity URLs

Remember the day when Facebook rolled out customized URLs for all of its users? Ever wished that Google would follow suit and allow you to personalise your Google+ URL? Well, the day has finally come! Google has officially introduced vanity URLs for Google+ pages.

Don’t go rushing to customize your own Google+ URL, though – these vanity URLs have only been rolled out for a select number of companies and celebrities so far. So while Britney Spears may have been able to change her URL to google.com/+britneyspears, the rest of us may have to wait a while to get the same privilege.

Note that this short, easy to remember URL still redirects to a somewhat longer version. For example, Toyota’s google.com/+totoya redirects to https://plus.google.com/+toyota/posts, but it’s still certainly a step in the right direction for Google’s social network.

We can expect that Google+ will make these vanity URLs available to more users in the future, according to a blog post from one of Google’s employees released earlier this week: “At first, we’re introducing custom URLs to a limited number of verified profiles and pages. But over time we plan to offer custom URLs to many more brands and individuals, so please stay tuned!”

If you’re an active Google+ user, or even if you have ever searched for business pages or personal profiles on Google+, you understand how difficult it can be to find an account based on a long string of random numbers. This update has made Google+ profiles much easier to search for and share.
