Backlinks are a must. If you want to rank number one for a keyword on Google, you need an army of backlinks pointing back to your site. The most successful search engine marketers are those who have the most incoming links to their site from the sites with the highest Page Ranks (Google's measure of the quality of a website). They do this by having the anchor text in the incoming links. The anchor text would be the keyword/s they are targeting for the number one spot on Google.

Building backlinks on your own is a time-consuming task. A shortcut to ranking number one quickly on Google for a averagely competitive search term is by buying backlinks.

What you'd want to do is to buy as many high Page Rank incoming links as possible, so that when the next Page Rank update comes, your site will receive a boost in Page Rank.

Avoid sites which provide content that is not original or is simply copied from another site. These sites may be penalized by Google for having duplicate content and if it links to your site, you could be affected too. Also try to avoid having too many links in sites which are totally unrelated to yours, as the search engine spiders will become suspicious and think you are spamming.
