Using Keywords

Posted by E-Web Marketing in SEO

Using keywords correctly in your internet marketing is a very important part of your online marketing as it relates directly to your search engine ranking. In other words, they can determine what google page your site lands on when keywords are entered into Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc., search engines.

Keywords are based on your article or website topic and content. Your keywords should be determined before writing the article or creating the website. Why? It is important that the keywords you choose are part of the heading and description of your page. In addition to increasing your SEO ratings, keywords in your title and description are also helpful to your readers or those searching for your topic.

Keywords should also be found throughout the content. The keywords are a reflection of the theme and intent of the page. Often search engines give more weight to the beginning of the page or article; therefore, you want to make sure you have them near the top of the page. Keywords should be spread throughout your text but not overused as they can then be detrimental to your rankings. Your text should be relevant to the subject matter and sound normal to the average user.

Keywords should always be used within your links. The linking text or anchor text is what the people click on to get to another page or resource. That text including the preceding phrases and following phrases needs to be chosen carefully. If you are linking to your company page within a blog or some other page, the name of your company should be the anchor text. For example, if I am selling green widgets, then my anchor text should be specifically green widgets. The phrases following may describe or say something about my green widgets that include keywords or phrases. Google may give you extra points and that can mean the difference between being on the first page or listed at all.

Two types of links are Internal and External. Internal links are within your control and should be optimized. They are used to move from one page to another or one blog or article to another. Never use words like Keep reading or click here or home as your anchor text. In addition use a variety of keywords that describe the post you are linking to in order to keep your readers interested and provide more information for search engines. External links are more difficult to control as those are external sites and links to your site.

Choosing keywords and links takes time but is well worth the practice and effort to optimize your site.
