The Easy Way to Get Your Website Indexed by MSN
By Jinger Jarrett
MSN is the third most popular search engine on the internet. Although its ranking sometimes changes, it is usually one of the 10 most popular websites on the internet according to Alexa.
Unlike Google and Yahoo, which have extensive information and tools for submitting your website to their search engines, MSN does not. It simply offers you a form where you may submit your URL.
What it does tell you is that they use a crawler to crawl the web and discover new sites. A crawler goes through the web looking for new sites and links.
Even though MSN may find your site eventually, I would still recommend that you submit. This will help you cover all of the bases in your search engine marketing plan.
Another consideration is the type of site you are submitting. If you are submitting a blog, then I would recommend you submit to both MSN and Moreover. The reason is that at one time MSN had partnered with Moreover, a Yahoo company, to handle MSN's RSS search. As far as I know, this partnership is still in effect.
To cover all of your bases though, I recommend that if you are submitting a blog, then submit to both MSN and Moreover. Ping your blog regularly with Moreover as it is a popular directory.
Your first step in preparing your site for submission to MSN is the same as Google and Yahoo: choose the right keywords and optimize your website for those keywords.
Once you have optimized your website, then create a sitemap. Even though MSN doesn't offer you a way to submit your site the way Google and Yahoo do, you may still submit your sitemap to MSN. This will help you get your site crawled faster.
When you are ready to submit, go the MSN or some other search engine and type in "Submit to MSN" (Without the quotes). You will find the link to submit your site.
Click on this link. Type in the verification code so that MSN knows you are human. Then, you may either type in the link to your website or the link to your sitemap.
If you have RSS feeds or a sitemap, then the next step is to "ping" your feed to get it indexed in Moreover. You will need to use a ping service. Sites like Pingomatic will allow you to ping your RSS feed to show Moreover your site has been updated.
Now that you have pinged your site (if you have RSS feeds), then you are done. Check back in about 90 days to make sure your site has been indexed. If it has not, then resubmit again.
