Article from SEO Company
I would like to think that most people are fairly honest when it comes to trying to help others. However, after being in business for several years, I have realized that this is not always true. Especially when it comes to technology. I have found that a lot of companies will take advantage of other companies who aren't in the know. Ignorance is not bliss when you are in business for yourself. It is the equivalent of throwing money out the window.

One particular technology that has come into play recently is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Although it has been around for a while, the science is consistently changing. In today's day and age, you can do your own SEO or pay someone to do it for you. I have always been a do-it-yourselfer at heart. However, not everyone is up for the challenge of learning SEO. That's why there are people like me.
I teach individuals on how to optimize their site everyday. I have no interest in getting a consulting gig out of the training. My goal is to train my students on the steps that they need to take to get better rankings that convert. However, I have worked with many students who have been burned. They pay a lot of money to get their site optimized and nothing really happens. Most of the time it is a web development company that is doing the burning. They throw out acronyms and meta tags terms like it is going out of style. However, the customer is basically going to believe exactly what they say. After all, they are the expert, right? Wrong. most of the time web development shops are filled with programmers and usually pretty good ones at that. However, just because you are a good programmer doesn't mean that you know anything about SEO. I have put together a list of some useful tips that will help you when engaging with an SEO.
Do your research before engaging with an SEO/ web development shop.
Know the process so that you can talk intelligently, and avoid scams. The biggest mistake that an SEO can make when engaging with you is not having a clearly defined plan. For instance, if an SEO says "email me a list of keywords, and I will do the research on them", that is the 1st red flag. This means that they are relying on you to give them the keywords. I have taught enough people to know that newbies have no idea what good keywords are for their site.
Make sure that your SEO doesn't rely on Black Hat tricks. Ask about the process that they will use. If it sounds shady, ask more questions. Shady techniques will hurt you more in the long run.
Talk with more than just one SEO. Make sure you have someone else to make a comparison. However, be careful of the salesman. He is slick and can make things sound really easy and great.
Take a class on SEO This is probably the best thing you can do to educate yourself on the process. I have often had people in my class that work with other SEO's. They just want to understand what is going on from a higher level. Of course I would like you to attend my class, but there are also some others out there that provides exceptional training as well. Do yourself a favor and attend a seminar. If you pick a good one, you will be surprised about how easy SEO really is. This is the part where I plug my company.
