Despite releasing an alternative phone platform to combat the iPhone, Google has not decided to cut ties with the iPhone, and has recently released an update to Google searches for the iPhone.

According to Google’s Official Mobile Blog:

Results are formatted to be neatly displayed on the mobile screen, so there’s no need to scroll side to side. Local search results now include easier-to-press “Get Directions” and click-to-call links. Maps are shown by default in the case of a single listing or accessible by the “Show map” link for multiple listings. For those of you wanting to access the classic desktop search results format, it’s only a click away, with the “Classic” link near the bottom of each page.

Although these additions are a welcome boon for owners of one of the most amazing pieces of technology currently out there, it is Google’s direction that interests the team here at E-Web Marketing more. Although Google is directly competing in the smart phone market, is is willing to make sure that its product is in the best possible condition for people using a different phone. Will this generous stance continue into the future when competition may become more fierce? Only time will tell.

This does sound odd at first, but through Google, flu trends in America are now trackable. How is this done? It has been found that a new common symptom of the flu includes Americans entering phrases like “flu symptoms” into Google and other search engines before seeing a doctor.

That simple act, multiplied across millions of keyboards in homes around the country, has given rise to a new early warning system for fast-spreading flu outbreaks, called Google Flu Trends.

In early February, for example, the C.D.C. reported that the flu cases had recently spiked in the mid-Atlantic states. But Google says its search data show a spike in queries about flu symptoms two weeks before that report was released. Its new service at google.org/flutrends analyzes those searches as they come in, creating graphs and maps of the country that, ideally, will show where the flu is spreading.

What is the best way to get a whole lot of data very, very quickly? Ask someone who already has it to hand it over to you. And that’s exactly what Google is doing. Previously before today, Google was grabbing data off True Local mainly for their Maps vertical. It appears now though that Google has switched to Sensis and signed a deal with them to share data between each other.

What does this mean for users? It means that Google search will now power the Sensis web search (if you can’t beat them…… ) and display Google text-based ads. Not only that, Google will also be the backend for all of Sensis partners, such as Big Pond. And Sensis scratches Google’s back by handing over its Yellow business directory data, probably Australia’s largest repository, so that Google Maps starts to become a whole lot more relevant. We are assuming anyway.

Sensis and Yellow provide millions of Australian businesses with a medium to promote their goods and services on the Internet. With the continual uptake of local based and personalised searches, as well as mobile device users seeking location specific data at an instant, it seems also natural for these two companies to join forces.

With this business advertising deal that has just been announced with Google and Sensis, it will allow the data from the Yellow listings to now be accessible on Google Maps.

What we have found recently with a lot of Google Maps Search results is that there appears to be quite a few “spammy” type listings, with businesses employing less than ethical means to flood those results. Seeing now that Yellow will be providing data, it should improve the trust-worthiness of the results. Businesses now that have duplicate listings, but with only one authentic location, might be able to be called out, as the Yellow data might show that another business already is claiming that location.

It would be great to see both Google and Sensis combat the abuse of the Maps service with this new data share agreement.

In an update to that news we read this afternoon that Yahoo!7, the joint venture of Yahoo! and channel 7 will be laying off 10% of their own staff effective immediately. The move will see up to 20 Yahooers hitting the job market. Yahoo’s global workforce is 14,300 people and was already cut by 7% in February of this year when around 1000 workers were culled.

The incidence of click fraud has reduced to 16 percent of all clicks industrywide in the second quarter; this is down from 16.2 percent. Even though it has dropped, the figure is still a significantly high number and remains a concern for search advertising businesses along with Google, which owes much of its success to pay-per-click (PPC).

… the use of botnets to perpetrate click fraud continues to rise, reaching almost 28 percent of all fraudulent or invalid clicks, up from 25.2 percent in the second quarter. This is a very concerning trend, according to Cuthbert.

A botnet is a network of computers that have been secretly compromised by malicious hackers who use them for a variety of tasks, such as sending spam and, in this case, perpetrating click fraud.

When someone says ”geo-targeting”, we think of targeting a region and having your product/service being advertised for the searches in that area only. In turn, limiting your focus area to fewer clicks to more qualified users. But Yahoo! Search Marketing has implemented a new feature that will bring more traffic to your site.

Previously when you wanted to target United States, you had to either select the entire market - both the U.S. and Canada - or individually select each of the 50 states. Now you have the ability to pinpoint your market!

… some advertisers need even more focus, especially in more populous regions. Yahoo! now lets you zoom in on targeted cities and, in a beta feature, ZIP codes as well.

… you can use the pulldown to select your target area by Entire Market, Country, State/Province, DMA , City or ZIP code. A map will provide a visual of the areas you are selecting.

To narrow your scope further, try our ZIP code feature, currently in beta. First, select ZIP/Postal Code from the pulldown. From here you may type in the ZIP codes of the areas you want to serve, and use the Search button to confirm where the ZIP codes you’ve selected are located. You can also use the dynamic map to zoom in and out and find more ZIP codes within your area if you don’t know them all offhand.

This feature has been long needed and I would imagine many PPC managers will be happy with the addition. More info can be found here.
