2011 Trends for Search Engines

2011 is another new year, and you are probably wondering what has the search engines have in store for us. Let’s take a look at some trends for 2011.

As many philisophers say, ‘The only thing that is constant is change’. This applies to search engines as well, and definately to Google. During 2010, Google made numerous changes, from the modification of algorithms to the addition of more features designed to improve the experience of users. 

The number and frequency of these changes made effective SEO more difficult to implement and maintain, making it more crucial than ever that you outsource the SEO of your website to experts who study search engine behaviour full-time. And as Google is always looking for more revenue streams and value-adding innovations, we can be pretty certain that change will not slow down in 2011 – so keep yourself updated and be ready to adapt!

Other choices
While Google has been dominating the search engine user market for years now, it is not the only choice. Alternatives like Bing, Blekko, DuckDuckGo and Yandex cater to the user desire to select the best search engine for their needs. We expect more search engines to emerge in 2011, though whether any of them have a chance of taking more than a few percent user share away from Google Almighty is up for debate!

The smart money for the coming year is on the new advanced search engine Blekko, released late in 2010 with a suite of SEO and web development friendly features. It is definitely an attractive choice for web geeks, though not many “regular” users are yet aware of Blekko.

It’s a feature, not a bug
Do we all remember when Google was very simple and easy to use? Nowadays, Google’s search results have been cluttered with a plethora of additional results (Images, Video, Blogs etc), features (Instant, Preview, Wonder Wheel), and ubiquitous ads. Newer users might not think much of this, but for those of us who have grown up with Google, it can be a challenge to become familiarised with all this information cluttered on our computer screens. We had better get used to it though – there can only be more of the same in 2011 and beyond.

Though most of us don’t want to think about it, Google does not value the privacy of its users highly, and knows more of your personal data than you probably think. Experts are divided as to whether people will start to care more or less about this uncomfortable truth in the coming year – but one thing is for sure, we can expect a few more lawsuits against Google!
