Changes in Options for Validation/Verification of Your Google Places Account
In the past, it has been possible to instantly verify and validate your Google Places account by phone or SMS. There have now been some changes to this process, wherein it is only possible to receive verification by postcard, which takes 2-3 weeks to come through.
Why has this change occurred?
While it is not certain whether this is a temporary issue that Google is working to resolve, it does appear that this may be Google’s answer to spammers using false addresses and phone numbers to validate their listings and get them live instantly.
What does this mean for me?
Even though it will take 2-3 weeks for your listings to go live, you can still work on your listing in the interim. You can prepare it with things like citations, reviews and local optimisation on the landing page so that when it does go live, it is fully set.
Certain changes to your listings will now also require postcard validation – so make sure you keep in mind when making changes that these changes could take 2-3 weeks to take effect. So check, double-check and triple-check everything, because you may have to live with that error for a couple of weeks!
