Marissa Mayer, a 13 year veteran of Google, has joined Yahoo! as President and CEO. In a press release issued on Yahoo!’s News Center website today, Mayer is stated to be, “honoured and delighted to lead Yahoo!, one of the Internet’s premier destinations for more than 700 million users”.
Through her time as Vice President of Local, Maps and Location Services at Google, Mayer championed many of the company’s visionary search products including Google Maps, Google Earth, Zagat (read our post on Local scores here), as well as many of the companies innovations: Image Search, Toolbar, and Gmail.
With her extensive experience and successful track record , Mayer has brought new excitement to the Yahoo! position, which has struggled in the past with its previous CEOs. These have included Carol Bartz and Scott Thompson, who infamously stepped down after falsifying information on his resume. While Yahoo! has struggled in recent years in search, Mayer’s role reignites hope for the development of new search and product options for a better user experience.
