Finally the wait is over, Apple has unveiled the new iPhone 3GS, the successor of the iPhone 3G which was divulged one year ago. The iPhone 3GS will be available in Australia on the 7th of June 2009 and will sport a number of upgrades from its predecessors including a double capacity of 32 GB, a digital compass, the ability to record videos and then a little more to help Apple exceed its already 20 million unit market share.
So, what’s the big fuss about? Well here is just the beginning. Firstly, the larger memory will allow owners to store up to 7,000 songs or 40 hours of video on their handsets which they can now download directly from iTunes. The iPhone 3GS is also known to be much faster than the original iPhone. “The “S” stands for speed – because it’s the fastest, most powerful iPhone we’ve ever made”, said Apple vice president Phil Schiller, launching the product at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The applications will run up to two times faster than the iPhone 3G meaning double the RAM. Also the device has a new three megapixel camera with an auto focus and will be able to shoot and store videos.
The iPhone 3GS introduces a number of new features to the original iPhone although available on other phones including copy and paste and multimedia messages. For the first time though, on any phone, it can act as an internet connection for computers, allowing laptop computers to piggyback on the phones pipeline to the internet connection.
Another new feature is the voice activated dialling device. You can say a person’s name and the iPhone will dial the person asked for. You can control the play back of the phone with your voice and ask it to play a particular song by an artist and it will respond. You can ask it what song is playing and it will answer you. It is so comprehensive that you can also say “play more songs like this” and it will continue with the genre or artist playing depending on what is in your audio library, it has maintained and exceed the rumoured expectations and is defiantly an iTune genius.
“The iPhone has changed how people think about their phones – it wasn’t too long ago that people were frustrated with these… what I’ll call crappy devices,” said Apple vice president Phil Schiller. The iPhones is extremely influential in the competitive mobile market, with its competitors scrabbling to build their own phones that imitate the iPhone’s downloadable applications, touch sensitive screen, and user friendly web browsing.
